Shubman Gill's 269 Sparks Praise and Regret
Shubman Gill silenced his critics and stamped his authority as India’s captain with a stunning innings of 269 runs in the 2nd Test against England at Edgbaston. On a pitch that favored batting, Gill displayed exceptional temperament, shot selection, and fitness as he anchored India to a formidable first-innings total of 587.
While Yashasvi Jaiswal (87), Ravindra Jadeja (89), and Washington Sundar (42) contributed valuable runs, it was Gill who towered above them all, staying focused for nearly two days of cricket and showcasing elite-level concentration.
India, powered by his stellar effort, took complete control of the match. However, when Gill was dismissed 31 runs shy of a milestone 300, the mood changed—from celebration to what-ifs.
Yuvraj Singh and His Father React: “A Crime to Get Out When Set”
Yograj Singh, former India cricketer and father of Yuvraj Singh, called Gill’s dismissal a ‘crime’. Both he and Yuvraj—who has mentored Shubman over the years—expressed disappointment, not at the runs Gill scored, but at the runs he left behind.
“When you are 250 not out, you don’t throw it away. Yuvraj is pained. When a player is that well-set, he must aim for 300, 400… Why not 500, if Brian Lara can do it?” Yograj told ANI.
He highlighted the psychological discipline that greats like Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar displayed—scolding themselves for any lapse in focus, no matter how many runs they had already scored.
Mentorship and the Legacy Behind Gill’s Growth
Shubman Gill has been part of Yuvraj’s mentorship circle, alongside talents like Abhishek Sharma and Arshdeep Singh. Yograj credited Yuvraj for shaping Gill’s growth, especially working on technical adjustments like his top-hand grip and balance during cover drives.
The Edgbaston innings may have showcased a cricketing genius in full bloom—but legends like Yuvraj and his father want Gill to aspire to be “not just great, but generational.”
“Gill is constantly evolving. His right-hand issue is much improved. He’s batting like magic,” Yograj added.
