Jadeja’s 89, Gill’s 269 Lead India at Edgbaston
Ravindra Jadeja once again proved why he’s one of India’s most valuable Test players. On Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, the all-rounder scored a composed 89 and stitched a massive 203-run partnership with captain Shubman Gill, who smashed a career-best 269. Their stand helped India post a mammoth 587 in the first innings.
Jadeja, who has been on three Test tours of England, played the perfect supporting role to Gill’s masterclass. His 137-ball knock was filled with grit, patience, and timely boundaries. Though he missed out on a century, his contribution was vital in taking India from a shaky 211/5 to a commanding position.
“Wo Time Gaya!” – Jadeja’s Cheeky Take on Captaincy
After the day’s play, Jadeja was asked if he still harbored ambitions of leading the Indian Test team. With a smile, he replied, “Wo time gaya!” (That time is gone now), drawing laughter from the press room.
He was also asked about Shubman Gill’s growth as a leader and batter. Jadeja responded with admiration and humor:
“You didn’t see how much Shubman Gill has grown? He scored 269 runs. Aaj lag nahi raha tha ki wo out hoga (It didn’t look like he would get out today).”
Jadeja’s praise reflects the growing confidence in Gill’s leadership, especially after his record-breaking knock—the highest by an Indian Test captain.
India’s Bowlers Strike Early After Batting Blitz
Following the batting heroics, India’s bowlers came out firing. Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj tore through England’s top order, reducing them to 13/3. Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope fell for ducks, while Zak Crawley managed just 19.
Joe Root and Harry Brook steadied the innings with an unbeaten 52-run stand, taking England to 77/3 at stumps. But India remained firmly in control.
Looking ahead, Jadeja laid out India’s plan:
“We will have to take 2-3 wickets before lunch tomorrow. If we do that, we’ll definitely be ahead in the game.”
