Gill Slams 10th Test Century in New Delhi
Shubman Gill achieved his 10th Test century and fifth as India captain in just seven matches, reaching three figures in 177 balls. The India captain struck 14 boundaries and a six before India declared the first innings at 518/5 in the New Delhi Test against West Indies. Gill remained unbeaten on 129 when India ended their innings.
This 129 not out ranks as his fifth-best Test score. His highest remains the 269 he hit against England at Birmingham. In fact, four of his top five knocks have come in recent months, with his top three against England away.
Gill’s Form Peaks in 2025
The year 2025 has arguably been Gill’s best in red-ball cricket. He has amassed over 940 runs in 14 Test innings at an average of 72.3, while maintaining a strike rate of 62.29. He has scored just one fifty in that span, showing how often he converts into big scores.
Earlier in the innings, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was run out for 175 after a mix-up involving Gill, while Sai Sudharsan added a fluent 87. Dhruv Jurel contributed 44 before India quickly declared.
India already won the first Test at Ahmedabad by an innings and 140 runs, putting them firmly on course for a series victory.
Records & Milestones
Gill’s ton in 177 balls is among his most efficient in Tests. It is also his first Test hundred at home as captain. He now equals record holders like MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly, who scored five centuries as captain.
In this Test, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 175 came off 258 balls with 22 fours, underscoring India’s dominance on a flat pitch. The West Indies attack was unable to break consistent partnerships, with Jomel Warrican being their most successful bowler (3 for 98).
Gill’s rise has drawn comparisons to Virat Kohli, especially in terms of consistency and big scores under pressure. India now carry a massive first-innings total. The bowlers will have to back this up, but the series lead and batting dominance place India firmly in control.
